Note: I'm a procurement manager, not a marketing writer. I've managed a beverage packaging budget of roughly $1.2M a year for the last six years, and I've learned the hard way that the supplier's brand story and the supplier's invoice can tell two different stories. This is the checklist I run through before I approve any aluminum can order.

Step 1: Check the Recycling Story Against Data

  3. Third-party verification or a source for each sustainability stat.

That means if you print “recyclable” on your can, you should know whether the product can be recycled in the places where your customers actually live. I don't have hard data on every municipal recycling program, but I know a good supplier will be able to point you to the source. If they can't, that's a red flag.

Step 2: Build a TCO Model, Not a Price Sheet

The easiest mistake is to compare unit prices. I've done it, and I've paid for the lesson.

A few years ago, I was comparing a well-known aluminum packaging supplier against a smaller vendor. The smaller vendor quoted 8% less per can, which looked great in a summary table. I nearly approved it until I built a full TCO model. The lower quote had freight charged separately, a pallet minimum that didn't match our line's throughput, and a $175 setup fee for every artwork change. When I added it all up, the “cheap” option was 4% more expensive than the higher-quoted supplier. That's a 12-point swing hidden in the details.

Include these in your comparison:

  • Cost per can, delivered (not FOB factory)
  • Minimum order and pallet configuration
  • Setup or plate fees per SKU
  • Artwork revision fees
  • Line changeover time and lost production
  • Storage cost per pallet at your warehouse
  • Expected defect rate and the cost of stopping your line

Your vendor may not know your storage costs. That's fine. You're the one who needs to know them.

Step 3: Treat the Can as a Package, Not a Poster

This is the step where I see the most “creative” problems. A Japandi poster—minimal, lots of negative space, maybe a single accent line—can look stunning as a printed piece. But a beverage can is a cylinder. It has a seam, a lid, a bottom, and a legal label area. The same artwork that works as a flat poster can fail on a can because the seam cuts through the design, the lid takes up space, or the print colors shift on the aluminum substrate.

Before you approve final artwork:

  • Get the actual dieline file from the supplier (not a generic one from the internet).
  • Work with the design team to position the seam in a low-impact area.
  • Print a proof on the actual can, not on paper.
  • Do a scuff test and a refrigeration test.

I watched a brand spend $32,000 on a beautiful design campaign and then kill it on the packaging because nobody checked the wrap spec. That's not a packaging vendor problem; that's a process problem.

Step 4: Walk the Warehouse Before You Sign

Aluminum cans are durable, but they're not indestructible. Humidity, temperature swings, and direct sunlight can cause label fading, condensation, and even cardboard pallet issues. Most procurement checklists ignore this because it's not in the supplier quote.

When I audited a brand's warehouse last year, I noticed the storage area had large windows facing south. Pallets near the window had faded printed shrink film, and the team was worried about the cans underneath heating up in summer. The fix was straightforward: we installed a commercial frosted window film with UV protection to reduce heat gain. It cost about $200 for the material and an hour of labor. I'm not a facilities expert, but that single change protected the inventory and made the warehouse more comfortable.

Walk your own facility:

  • Where exactly will the pallets sit?
  • Is the floor dry and level?
  • Does sunlight hit the storage area?
  • Is there space to rotate inventory FIFO (first in, first out)?

If you're in a leased space and the landlord won't allow permanent changes, a commercial frosted window film can still be installed without damaging the glass—that's often enough to get approval.

Step 5: Write a Contract You Can Exit

Nobody likes to plan for failure, but a packaging contract without clear exit terms is a trap. I once had a supplier miss three delivery windows in a row. Because our contract had quality and lead-time clauses, we were able to give notice and shift production. It was still messy, but it didn't destroy us.

Define:

  • Acceptable quality limit (AQL) for defects.
  • What happens when the defect rate exceeds it.
  • Service level for lead times and the change process.
  • Exit rights for repeated failures.
  • Who owns the artwork and dies if you leave.

Here's what happens if you put super glue on your nails: it bonds fast, it doesn't come off when you want it to, and the harder you pull, the more damage you do. A bad supplier relationship can feel the same way. A good contract is the thing that lets you dissolve the bond cleanly. Check it before you sign, not after.

Common Mistakes I've Seen

Where This Checklist Ends

This is not a complete packaging engineering guide. I'm not an engineer, and I haven't run every filling line configuration. This checklist is the commercial layer that sits above the technical work. If you need line speed calculations or material compatibility, get an engineer involved early.

It also depends on your situation. Our purchasing patterns are predictable—mostly two can sizes, with regular orders throughout the year. If you're a seasonal beverage brand, your inventory and freight math will be different. Your mileage may vary, and that's okay.

The point is to be deliberate. Verify the sustainability story, run the TCO, check the artwork, look at the warehouse, and protect your exit.
