The Call That Changed How We Buy Packaging

Test Beyond the Sample

The Lesson: Efficiency Means Fewer Failures, Not Lower Cost Per Unit

This was true 10 years ago when custom packaging was harder to source online. Today, with so many vendors offering empty blister packs and Funko protector options, the gap between high and low quality is largely about specification clarity.

Honestly, I'm still not sure why some vendors consistently hold tighter tolerances while others drift. My best guess is it comes down to whether they treat quality as a checkbox or a process. The vendors who treat it as a process are slightly more expensive upfront and dramatically cheaper over time.

Switching to spec-based procurement cut our packaging failure rate from 8% to under 0.5% in two years. That's real efficiency. Not from paying less—from designing failure out of the system.
